J's 2nd Birthday

I'm a month late, but better late than never, right? We pulled out the bouncer we bought him last year for his b-day and bought a ball pit and tent/tunnel for the kids to play with. But there was probably too much going on and too many kids for J to handle so he didn't have as much fun as I thought he would. But I'm glad it's over; I tried to keep it as simple as possible but it still ended up being a lot of work. And of course I say this now, but no more big parties until he turns 5.

No news is good news

It's been a month since my MRI and the doctor said that I would only hear from her if there was an abnormality so my results must be normal. It would be nice to know what caused the seizures but at this point I doubt we'll ever find out. So now the focus shifts to preventing any future seizures. Which means I have to continue taking the anti-seizure meds for 2 years. If I remain seizure I can discontinue the meds at that time, so lets all keep our fingers crossed. Now I'm counting down the days until I can drive again. I'm definitely not liking being totally dependent on others to get around.

Forward Facing

We turned J's car seat around shortly after he turned 2. It's nice to turn around and see exactly what he's doing now.

2 year appointment

Weight: 20 lbs, 4 ozs, less than 5th percentile
Length: 30 1/4 inches, less than 5th percentile

Clothes size: 18 months
Shoe size: 4/5
Diaper size: 4

Justin continues to follow his own growth curve but did have a little bit of catch up growth. But since he's still small for his age Dr. Hirsch wants us to continue giving him Pediasure and not switch to whole milk. He transitioned pretty well to the sippy cup so we're now bottle free, YAY! He's doing very well with his solids, eating 3 meals a day and snacking in between, but has his moments of pickiness like any toddler. We're now working on introducing more juice and water.

Dr. Hirsch was really excited to see J running around the office and see how far he's come. She couldn't stop smiling throughout the exam.

Normally he wouldn't be seen again until his 3rd birthday but Dr. Hirsch wants to see him again in 6 months to monitor his weight gain. But other than that he's doing very well.

4 month appointment

Weight: 16 lbs 3 ozs, 50th -75th percentile
Length: 24 1/2 inches, 10th -25th percentile
Head circumference: 40 cm

Clothes size: 6 & 9 months
Shoe size: 0-3 months
Diaper size: 3

Our little chunky monkey is doing very well. He's not rolling just yet, but he's pushing up on his elbows and using his legs to push his butt up in the air and over his boppy.

Nathan seems to have his days and nights mixed up; the past few weeks he's been up during the wee hours of the morning talking up a storm. Dr. Hirsch said at this point he's capable of sleeping 8 hours at a time so during the day he shouldn't sleep more than 3 hours at a time. Hopefully that helps get him back on track and gives me some much needed sleep.

He doesn't particularly care for his bassinet so at night he's been sleeping in his swing or with us. I'd like to transition him to his crib/room soon.

Dr. Hirsch gave us the okay to start solids. We'll start with rice cereal for a couple of weeks and then add on veggies and fruits. I'm thinking he'll take to solids pretty well since he's such a healthy eater.

5 on Friday

Here are 5 reasons I'm loving my boys this week:

1. Justin never ceases to amaze me; he’s totally mastered climbing all pieces of furniture. He’s also quite good at getting himself down without hurting himself. The other day he pushed the pillows off of the couch before proceeding to dive off, head first.
2. I love the quality time Nathan & I spend together while nursing. He now smiles at me while nursing, how sweet!
3. Justin continues to be such a sweetheart. The other day Carl and I were giving each other mini-back rubs while hugging so Justin joined in and started massaging his dad’s leg.
4. Nathan is becoming quite the flirt. He’s such a ham, as soon as someone smiles at him he smiles right back.
5. Justin has the cutest dance move. I can’t quite describe it, but he lifts one leg/knee up and stomps to the music.

3's a Crowd

Poor Nathan, he couldn't really enjoy his time in the jumperoo when J and AJ joined in on the fun.

1st Ear Infection

Justin's temperature spiked to 105.5 last night so we took him to urgent care. Fortunately we made it just in time, just 5 minutes before they were closing, which worked out in our favor because we were seen right away.

The nurse got a reading of 98.7 when she took his temperature under his arm. I mentioned that we started taking his temperature on his forehead because he never stays still long enough to get an accurate reading any other way. But she blew me off, saying that her reading was accurate since I had held his arm down. Now I know I'm not crazy, I took his temperature several times to make sure it wasn't a fluke. And he was hot, not warm, to the touch. Even with gloved hands the dr. noticed how hot J was.

Anywhoo, J's eardrums and throat were both red so the dr. prescribed Amoxicillin to treat the infection and told us to continue giving Tylenol every 4 hours to help reduce the fever and alleviate any pain. We'll follow up with Dr. Hirsch Monday or Tuesday to make sure his ears and throat are getting better. But his fever is going down, it was 99.1 when he woke up from his nap about a half hour ago.

Like Father Like Son

100.8

That was J’s temperature yesterday evening. During story time I noticed he felt a little warm but didn’t think too much about it since he had just been running around. I made a mental note to myself to check his temperature when we went upstairs for the night but got distracted when Nathan woke up hungry. But when Carl got home he noticed that J wasn’t quite himself so he took his temperature and it was 100.8.

We’ve been pretty fortunate that, with the exception of a few minor colds, J really hasn’t been sick or had a fever this high before. So had it not been for AJ running a fever earlier this week I’m not sure I would’ve known exactly what to do. I gave him a lukewarm bath, some Tylenol and re-checked his temperature about an hour later and it had gone down some. But he was breathing a little heavier than usual so we brought him to bed with us. If there was any doubt before, last night confirmed that it’s definitely time for a bigger bed; the five of us were pretty cramped. Just in case you’re wondering the five includes Basyl.

His temp had gone up to 101.2 this morning so I called his dr’s office; they said that if it was 102 or higher they’d tell me to bring him in. They mentioned that there were a lot of virus’ going around and since most symptoms don’t display themselves for up to 24 hours it was up to me whether or not to bring him in. Since he was his normal self and was still eating I decided to continue on with what we’re doing. He’s been a little clingy since I’ve been home and won’t take his cup of Pediasure so we’ll see how tonight goes.

5 on Friday

Here are 5 reasons I'm loving my boys this week:

1. Nathan is beginning to play with toys.
2. Justin is starting to string 2 words together; his newest phrase is “step back”.
3. Justin likes mimicking his TC, especially when she’s disciplining AJ. He likes to repeat “get down” and “no”.
4. Nathan smiles and squeals in delight when he sees me after I get home from work.
5. Now that AJ is walking play time is so much more fun; Justin likes to follow/chase AJ around the living room.

5 on Friday

Here are 5 reasons I'm loving my boy(s) this week:

1. Wednesday I walked out of the bathroom to find Justin with a pad of paper and an ink pen in his hands. What did he think he was going to do, write me a note.
2. Justin’s enjoying eating food now. Tuesday he grabbed sweet potatoes and corn out of his drawer, along with a spoon, and brought them to his TC as if to say “feed me”.
3. Justin continues to be a sweetheart. When Nathan cries J pats him on his shoulder to try and calm him down.
4. Justin’s getting really smart. During a visit with his great aunt he grabbed her keys, walked to the door and attempted to put one of the keys in the keyhole.
5. Nathan’s such a chunky monkey, how can you not love those cheeks.

Blissfully Unaware

So a few weeks ago a family friend met Nathan for the first time. Well my dad just brought it to my attention earlier this week that she had a concern about the coloring of Nathan's eyes. Apparently someone in her family had that same coloring and had some type of bone condition but she couldn't tell me much about it so I did some research. My dad kept asking if I noticed anything unusual about Nathan's eyes, which I haven't. Of course after hearing that I stared at his eyes for hours/days on end and at one point I thought I saw something, but I wasn't sure if I was seeing something because someone had said something or if it was because it was really there. Carlene hadn't noticed anything but Carl thought he may have noticed something so just to be on the safe side I called Dr. Hirsch. She said that the bluish/gray coloring in the white of the eye is not that uncommon in newborns. And since Nathan hasn't had any other symptoms/issues (i.e. fractures) she didn't see the need for him to undergo any extensive diagnostic testing. Of course she'll monitor him and keep an eye out for it, but I shouldn't worry too much about it. And although I totally trust and respect Dr. Hirsch I can't help but worry; but I'd much rather be blissfully unaware.
